25. PRAYER ELEVATES US ABOVE OUR PEERS
1 Chronicles 4:9-10
Jabez was MORE HONORABLE than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez CRIED OUT TO THE GOD of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And GOD GRANTED HIS REQUEST.
In a seemingly endless list of names that had to be in the cannon of scripture to validate ultimately the genealogy of the Messiah, a pause happens. Holy Spirit finds it important to bring our attention to the fact that not all names were there for just the counting.
Jabez rises above the mundane. His start in life is on the negative balance of things. A mother who had suffered so much at child birth that she chose to name the child Jabez. To some up his name – Pain and inconvenience.
Every time his name would be called, it would be a standing reminder of the pain and inconvenience he was to his mother.
Not much detail is given beyond that, Was the actual child bearing unbeatable? Or was it circumstances around the baby’s arrival? We know not. All we know is that Jabez existence epitomized pain to his mother and she made sure that no one would ever forget that.
A fear developed in Jabez. Having been declared a pain from birth he had one cry; I don’t want to be a source of pain in the future. This name must not be a self fulfilling prophecy of my tomorrow.
And what was to be his way out of this unfortunate fix? PRAYER! He cried out to the GOD of Israel and his fondest dream was granted. According to historians Jabez became a lawyer and a city was named after him.
