(IN PARTICULAR THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO LABOR TIRELESSLY TO THIS END)

THE CAIN CHALLENGE

Genesis 4:7-12
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

CAIN MURDERED HIS BROTHER

Talk of sibling rivalry,  the first family on earth was pretty dysfunctional.   Cain killed  his brother.  Spare a thought for Mother Eve!   She lost two sons in one day.  One to death the other to a curse.    Abel was now dead and Cain was going to be a vagabond.  And it was going to be some three hundred years before that void could be filled.

WHAT BOTHERED CAIN:  CAIN’S CHALLENGE –

THE BATTLES WITHIN

1.  THE DESIRE FOR ACCEPTANCE

Can felt left out. His offering was not accepted.   He offered veg instead of blood.   While he watched Abel’s sacrifice receive priority.
His problem was he wanted to do it his way, not the right way!

Genesis 4:7a
If you do well, will you not be accepted?

It’s never changed.   GOD loves all people.   He has made a plan through which people may enjoy His Presence.    Some people ignore the plan, and say GOD knows this is how I am and He will have to accept me just as I am.   Truth is, GOD loves us just as we are but too much to leave us the way we are.

2.  THE PRESSURE OF THE PERSON OF SIN

 Genesis 4:7b
And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

THE BATTLES WITHIN OPENED THE DOOR TO CRIME

James 4:1-3
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

THE DANGERS FACING MAN KIND – there are many but I divided  them into two.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ( and this is by no means an exhaustive list )

INTERNAL DANGERS:

1.    IGNORANCE

Hosea 4:6
my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.

2.  ADDICTIONS AND DESTRUCTIVE HABBITS

2 Peter 2:19
They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.

From porn to drugs

3.  BROKEN  HOMES

Deuteronomy 6:5-7
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

The African family has suffered generational disorders of absentee parenting.

The Narrative:

Fathers were forced to mines, mothers to “kitchens” to augment the miserably small income from the fathers who at times were caught up into “second homes” in the mines because marriage was never meant to be by correspondence cause.
Children grew up with absent parents they saw once a year over the Christmas season.

Grand parents lamented the fact that their children went to work in the cities because there was no money.
So, the grand children grow up with the desire that some day they will go and make more money to help their parents.
What they don’t realize that this picture has a big piece missing. The Joy and significance of growing with and raising your own children.

So, we’ve got professionals who can’t stand their homes.   When on leave they  feel miserable.    They can’t stand these walls, they can’t stand these children.   The vicious circle goes on …

While the average white child has Mom collecting them from school, have lunch and be helped with home work – the African child going to the same school waits for a collective transport that may come an hour or two later.
Bringing the child to and empty home with TV.  No prepared lunch, no help with home work.    When Mom arrives, she’s tired, prepares supper, and watches Her favorite soapie.   Hardly anytime to do Deut 6

4.  BROKEN DREAMS

Proverbs 13:12
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

EXTERNAL DANGERS

1.   DRUG AND ALCOHOL PROLIFERATION CULTURE

Proverbs 23:29-35

Saying 19
Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
“They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

2.   DELAYED OR MISCARRIED JUSTICE

Proverbs 31:4-5
It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
It is not for kings to drink wine,
Nor for princes intoxicating drink;
Lest they drink and forget the law,
And pervert the justice of all the afflicted

THEN OUR DISTINGUISHED SAFETY AND SECURITY OFFICERS ARE EXPECTED TO WORK TO
PREVENT
REDUCE
IF POSSIBLE EVEN ERADICATE CRIME. Who can be equal to such a task?

WHILE MANY HAVE DONE EXCEPTIONALLY WELL,  RECORDING SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS OF CRIME IN THEIR AREAS OF OPERATION
IT IS PRETTY CLEAR – THEIRS IS A DAUNTING TASK
AND THEIR WORK IS NEVER COMPLETE
– especially in a society that’s increasingly hostile towards GOD and His Word.

Psalms 127:1
Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.

TOWARDS PLACES OF SAFETY

1.  SAFETY IN THE NAME OF THE LORD

Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.

2.  SAFETY IN THE REPEATED WORD / WARNINGS OF SCRIPTURE

Philippians 3:1-2
Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!

3.   SAFETY IN THE COMPANY OF THE WISE

Proverbs 13:20
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Proverbs 1:33
But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
And will be secure, without fear of evil.”

4.    SAFETY IN THE COMPANY OF THE ANOINTING

1 Samuel 22:23
Stay with me; do not fear. For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe.”

Acts 27:31
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”

5.   SAFETY IN A CONSTANT PRAYER LIFE

Psalms 91:1-4
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fouler
And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

6.   SAFETY IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

Proverbs 28:1
The wicked flee when no one pursues,
But the righteous are bold as a lion.

Jeremiah 23:6
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
